5 highest run-getters in the last three IPL editions

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a regular feature of the Indian summer for 12 years now. However, a lot has changed since the inaugural edition and it has grown into one of the best T20 leagues in the world. There have been quite a few players that have come and gone, a few of them have remained consistent throughout the 12 seasons but there are new emerging stars who’ve started to peak in the last few years. Thus, here we look at the top five players with most runs in the last three editions of the IPL.

#1 Rishabh Pant – 1538 runs

It might come as a surprise but Rishabh Pant is the one leading the run charts when you consider stats only from the 2017 season. The Delhi left-hander has been very consistent. It was only in the 2016 edition that Pant made his IPL debut after an impressive run in the Indian Under-19 team. He blew hot and cold but as he grew in experience, Pant became a lot more consistent in the IPL.

In 2017, the Delhi wicket-keeper batsman scored 366 runs at a strike-rate of 165.61. It got better in the 2018 season as he smashed 684 runs while averaging 52.62 and striking at 173.60. Last season, he constantly got starts and was guilty of not converting them into big knocks. Yet, Pant was able to amass 488 runs which took his tally to 1538 runs in the last three seasons.

#2 Shikhar Dhawan – 1497 runs

Shikhar Dhawan has been a pretty consistent player in the IPL. There has been a lot of talk around his ability in T20I cricket but he’s been a consistent run-getter in the IPL. Over the last four years, Dhawan has made more than 475 runs every season. Since the start of 2017, Dhawan has aggregated 1497 runs which includes 12 half-centuries.

In 2017 and 2018, the Delhi-born opening batsman got 479 and 496 runs respectively for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and was a big part of their success. However, he decided to move to Delhi Capitals in 2019 and enjoyed another fruitful season with them. He scored 521 runs in the season as Delhi made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

#3 David Warner – 1333 runs

David Warner has played just two out of the last three seasons and is at the third spot in this list is a remarkable stat. The Australian opener was banned from the 2018 season due to his involvement in the ball-tampering fiasco. But that’s hardly had an impact on him. He’s been a beast in IPL cricket and has churned out runs for fun.

The SRH opener has ended up with the Orange Cap in 2017 and 2019. Warner scored 641 runs at an average of 58.27 in the 2017 season. The 2019 edition was even better as Warner played just 12 games and yet, finished at the top. He made 692 runs and registered a fifty-plus score in nine out of the 12 games. Overall, since 2017, Warner has scored 1333 runs at an average of 63.48.

#4 Virat Kohli – 1302 runs

After the jaw-dropping 973-run season in 2016, Virat Kohli has had an up and down time in the IPL. There’s no doubt he’s largely been at the top of the run charts for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but overall, he’s been slightly inconsistent. He missed the first three games of the 2017 season due to injury and couldn’t really get going. The RCB skipper scored 308 runs in the season, his worst and only non-400+ season since 2015.

The last couple of seasons have been better but inconsistent as well, especially after the standards he’s set. Kohli got 530 and 464 runs respectively in 2018 and 2019. His strike-rates have been better – 139.11 and 141.46 in the last two years respectively. Hence, with 1302 runs across the last three editions, Kohli is at the fourth spot in this list.

#5 Suresh Raina – 1270 runs

Having amassed 1270 runs since the start of the 2017 season, Suresh Raina just nudges ahead of KL Rahul to be placed fifth in this list of leading run-getters from the last three IPL editions. There was a slight dip in Raina’s performances in 2015 and 2016. But he’s back to his consistent best over the last three seasons in the IPL.

The left-hander from Uttar Pradesh led from the front in the 2017 edition as he scored 442 runs for the Gujarat Lions (GL). He averaged 40.18 and was striking at 143.97 in that season. He followed that up with a 445-run tournament in 2018 as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) went on to lift the IPL title. Last season saw another slight drop as Raina could muster 383 runs from 17 games and his strike-rate was in the low 120s as well.
