IPL Weekend Action Continued

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Our weekend IPL action continues on Sunday with another two blockbuster games which includes a mouth watering top of the table clash! So let’s get straight into the thick of the action.

Sunrisers Hyderabad VS Rajasthan Royals

Only two points separate these two sides as the Sunrisers Hyderabad currently sit in third spot and the Rajasthan Royals occupy seventh, however they have played one less match than Hyderabad.

The Sunrisers are slowly starting to find their feet in this seasons IPL and they will be hoping to continue their current good form having won three of their last four matches which includes a 69 run annihilation of Kings XI Punjab last time out.

The Rajasthan Royals form however has gone the other way and having won their first two matches they find themselves on a current three match losing streak and they lost heavily last time out to Mumbai by 57 runs.

The Royals won the last fixture played between the two sides however that stopped a four match winning streak for the Sunrisers and given the poor form Rajasthan currently find themselves in Hyderabad will be hoping they can start a new winning streak all over again.

The Sunrisers have got off to decent starts in three of their last four matches having opening wicket stands of 160, 34 and 77 between captain David Warner and IPL superstar Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow hit a magnificent 97 off of 55 balls last time out and if he can shake off the disappointment of not making his century he can continue his rich vain of form. Their bowling largely relies on Rashid Khan who has been sensational so far this season as he sits third in the league for the best bowling economy, sixth in most wickets and second in most dot balls which is crucial in this short format. He also tops the list of most maidens bowled so far this year. However they do need to find someone that can back Khan up.

The Royals top order has failed miserably in their last three matches apart from Jos Butlers fine 70 last time out. This has largely been down to Steve Smiths abysmal showings of 6, 5, and 3. His poor form meant that he dropped down to number three last time out but this didn’t help as Yashasvi Jaiswal who opened with Butler in Smiths place fell for a duck within two balls! This also means that they have no top run scorers within the top ten scorers in the league so far. However Sanju Samson has hit the most sixes so far this season and has the third best strike rate so they will be hoping that he can get his eye in early. Their bowling unit hasn’t been any better either as they are too reliant on English pace bowler Jofra Archer who has bowled the third highest amount of dot balls and has bowled the fastest eight balls this season topping the speed gun at 153.62 KM/H.

Mumbai Indians V Delhi Capitals

Without a doubt the tie of the round comes in Sunday’s second game as top of the table Mumbai face second placed Delhi with only run rate separating the two sides.

Mumbai started this years season off by losing two of their first three games but they have since gone on to win their last three games in a row. Furthermore all three wins came by big margins beating Rajasthan by 57, Hyderabad by 34 and Punjab by 48.

Delhi have won four of their five matches so far this season with their only blemish on their record coming against the Sunrisers. They too have had some large margin victories with wins of 59 runs against Bangalore and 44 runs against reigning champions Chennai.

History gives a slight edge to Delhi surprisingly as they have won three of the last five matches played between the two teams.

One of Mumbai’s biggest strengths this season has been they have always been able to rely on one of their players making a decent stand with the bat. Yadav was 79 not out last time, de Kock hit 67 against Hyderabad, Sharma hit 70 against the Kings XI and even when they lost to Bangalore Kishan hit 99 of just 58 deliveries and that’s not to mention that powerhouse Kieron Pollard has the best strike rate of any batsman so far this season. They have been just as successful with the ball as Bumrah, Boult and Pattison have all been chipping in taking wickets. Bumrah has also bowled the most amount of dot balls of any player this season which has help keep the scores down.

Delhi have based their success this season on team performances with everyone playing their own unique part. That’s not to take away from individual brilliances such as Marcus Stoinis who has the second best batting strike rate this season or Rabada who is the leading wicket taker in the league or even Axar Patel who has the best economy rate in the league.
